It is Friday and Saban has still made no decision. It was reported that LSU uppped their contract with Saban to pay him as much as $4 million a year. Saban is reportedly being offereed $5 million a year for the Miami Dolphins job. A Baton Rouge news outlet reported that the Miami Dolphins airplane landed in the area this morning. The news on Saban's coaching decision has to be taking a toll on his team as they prepare for the bowl game against Iowa.
It is being reported that the Miami Dolphins have officially offered Nick Saban the head coaching job. The terms of the contract have not been released. What Saban really likes about the job with the Fins is they will give him full control of the staff and the front office. LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman anticipates an answer from Saban on Thursday as to whether he will take the job in Miami.
It is being reported out of Oxford, that Noel Mazzone will be the next offensive coordinator at Ole Miss. While it has not been officially announced, it looks like it is a done deal.
In response to Coach Ed Murphy's spotlight article the other day, I was asked where Sean Murphy is these days. Sean played Center for the Rebels from 1988-1991. Murphy currently holds the record for blocked shots in a career with 180. Do not look for this record to be broken anytime soon. Sean went on and graduated from UMC in Jackson, and did his residency at Lake Forest University. He practices medicine as a Pulmonologist Critical Care Specialist in Winston-Salem, N.C. Sean is currently married and has two young sons.
Coach Mike Bianco's baseball team is ranked 16th in Collegiate Baseball's preseason poll. The Rebels who finished last season in a disappointing way finished with a record of 39-21. Ole Miss is one of nine SEC schools ranked in the top 40. Coach Ron Polk's, Bulldogs rank below Ole Miss at No. 19.
In Coach Rod Barnes 200th game at Ole Miss, the Rebels soared past the Seahawks of UT-Martin 92-64. Ole Miss continued to shoot lights out basketball in their effort. The Rebels were led by Senior Tommie Eddie with a game high 20 points. Kendrick Fox and Brandon Patterson both had 13 points for the Rebels. This was Ole Miss fifth straight win in 11 days. UT-Martin was led by Cleve Woodfork, who scored 13 points. Ole Miss moves to 7-4 on the season and will face VA Commonwealth in Richmond on Dec. 29th.
Channel 3 out of Memphis is reporting that Jay Hopson has resigned from Ole Miss. If this is true, Jay will probably be returning to Southern Mississippi. The Golden Buzzards have made changes to their coaching staff during the offseason and currently have several open coaching positions. Many people have speculated that former Ole Miss head coach and Jay did not get along together. It is interesting Jay would leave, because several people have talked about his loyalty to Ole Miss, his alma mater.
ESPN Classics just finished showing the 1999 Independence Bowl game between Ole Miss and Oklahoma. I remember being at that game and hearing some terrible country music singer attempt a version of the National Anthem. It was by far the most awful attempt at singing I have ever witnessed. The game was a great one. Oklahoma went up by one with a little over two minutes to go. On the next possession Ole Miss drove into the Oklahoma side of the field. Oklahoma had numerous penalties on the last series and basically set us up to win the game. Romaro Miller and Deuce set up a game winning field goal by Les Binkley with no time left. I remember ringing in the new millennium on our way back to the hotel. Trivia fact: Ole Miss vs. Oklahoma was the last NCAA football game of the twentieth century.
Ole Miss rolls into the BankcorpSouth Center in Tupelo tonight with a four game winning streak. The Rebels(6-4) face the UT-Martin Seahawks(3-5) tonight at 8:15. This will be only the second time in history Ole Miss has played in Tupelo, the last was in 1964. Once again look for Junior forward Londrick Nolen to dominate the game. Nolen currently leads the team in scoring, rebounding, blocks, and three pointers. Also look for Brandon Patterson to continue to develop as one of the best players on the team for the Rebels. The Skyhawks are led by 6-5 forward Jared Newson. Newson averages 16.1ppg and has had three double-doubles this year. UT-Martin lost to Duke 88-46 earlier this season. Click on the link below to listen to the game tonight http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/teams/mbf/#
The Bulldogs from Starkvegas defeated Florida A&M tonight at the Hump 104-80. Michael Boler a former Pillow Academy standout scored 2 points to put the Bulldogs over the century mark and also had one assist. To my knowledge, Boler is the only former MPSA currently playing in the SEC. The Bulldogs will invade the Tad Pad on Dec. 8.
Joe Cullen, a defensive specialist with 14 years of coaching experience is also expected to join Coach Orgeron's staff. Coach Cullen comes to Ole Miss from the Indiana Hoosiers where he was the defensive coordinator. While he will not be the coordinator at Ole Miss, he is expected to coach on the defensive side of the ball. Cullen played football and coached at UMASS. He has also coached at Richmond, LSU, and Tiger High in Memphis.
Orleans Parish Athletic Director Frank Wilson will be hired by Ole Miss to coach Running Backs. Wilson who before taking the A.D. position was the coach of O.P. Walker high school in Louisiana and led the team to multiple playoffs. Wilson is very well respected among the sate of Louisiana football ranks. Wilson is expected to be a really big asset for the program and will hopefully bring in big name recruits from the state.
Shawn Slocum, the son of former Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum, is being reported as being hired by Ole Miss. Shawn spent ten seasons coaching several positions with his dad at Texas A&M. The younger Slocum was the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at USC along with Orgeron under then USC coach Paul Hacket. He then returned back to A&M before being relieved of his duties when R.C. was fired. He spent last year in the construction business, while not coaching football. Hope Orgeron knows what he is doing with the hiring of Shawn.
Over the next several hours I will be posting some of the assistants that have been rumored to be hired as part of the new Ole Miss coaching staff. It is my understanding that both Matt Luke and Jay Hopson of the former coaching staff will join Coach O's staff as well.
Peyton Manning did not break Dan Marino's record this week against the Baltimore Ravens. Manning's total passing TD count is at 47 he needs one more to tie Dan the Man's record passing TD of 48. Coach Tony Dungy made a respectable coaching move late in the game to kick a field goal despite Mannings opposition. Even later in the game the Colts took a knee on the Ravens five. Both were the right calls on behalf of the Colts. Manning will have to wait until next weekend against the San Diego Chargers. It is ironic that Manning will probably break the record against a team his brother Eli refused to play for after being drafted by them.
A name that keeps popping up on some assistant coaching lists is Gunter Brewer. Gunter is the son of Billy"Dog"Brewer. Dog was the head coach at Ole Miss in the late 80's early 90's who was responsible for getting the Rebels put on probation. Son, Gunter has been an assistant at Ole Miss before in 1990. He is currently the wide receivers coach at North Carolina. Gunter coached Randy Moss at Marshall and was on the staff when Ole Miss defeated Marshall in the Motor City Bowl. Stewart Patridge and a yong Deuce McCallister lead the Ole Miss drive at the end of the game. Some in the "Good Ole Boy" network are pushing Gunter's name. However, I do not anticipate this happening.
In this weeks look into the Gerald Glass era we take a look at Ed Murphy. Murphy coached the Rebels from 1986-1992 having a 76-92 record, although he did carry the Rebels to the SEC Tournament finals and 2 NIT appearances. Murphy coached the likes of Rod Barnes, Edmund Fitzgerald, Juah Lieutenhen, Joe Harvell, and Patrick Eddie. Murphy is currently the Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach at the State University of West Georgia. Murphy's team currently has a record of 10-0. Murphy now 62 has battled a fight with cancer, yet continues to coach each day. After being fired by Ole Miss, Murphy spent one year as a TV commentator, before returning to the coaching ranks. Murphy has been credited with revolutionizing the basketball spirit and tradition of West Georgia. I can remember being at the SEC Basketball Tournament in Orlando, FL in 1990 when Murphy and the Rebels lost to Alabama in the championship game. That game also marks the lowest attendance record ever in the modern era to a SEC Tournament Championship Game. Joe Harvell and Gerald Glass both made the tournament team that year. Murphy will be remembered for taking the Rebels to this championship game. However, Murphy could not cut it in the SEC. He has done well with West Georgia and we wish him well.
I am currently reading a book titled Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer. This book takes an inside look in football traditions in the SEC, mainly on fans of Alabama football. The book is interesting to me because it follows Alabama RVers from school to school. Something Ole Miss fans are not known for compared to other schools is our RV crowd. I think Ole Miss fans really miss out on this football tradition. One year I would really like to travel to a game in an RV and sit with the RV crowd at nights. I have not finished this book yet, but RV fans seem to be a different breed of fans.
In front of an announced crowd of 1,800, the Ole Miss Rebels defeated Louisiana Monroe this afternoon 84-58. This Indian team was not very good and was never in the game. The game was dominated by Rebel Junior Londrick Nolen who had a game high 25 including multiple 3-pointers. Londrick really impressed those in attendance with his moves to the basket. Also for the game Lonny Jackson came off the end of the bench for a career high 7 points. A good game by the Rebels who extend their record to 6-4 and return to the court on Tuesday night at the Bankcorp South Center in Tupelo against UT Martin.
The rumor mill is speculating Coach O might hire former Ole Miss Offensive Coordinator Noel Mazzone to return to the same role he left six years ago. Mazzone who was the O.C. under Tommy Tubberville coached former QB Stewart Patridge and Romaro Miller. He did an excellent job leading with these two QB's. He is currently coaching at NC State under the same position. While many think he is a good QB coach they are not sure if this would be the best move for Coach O. Look for the rest of Coach O staff to be named within the next 24-48 hours, before he returns to USC
For those that like basketball, two of the best teams in the NCAA will be playing at 11. Kentucky vs. Louisville is usually a war between these instate rivalries. Look for Kentucky to control this game in a close one and Chuck Hayes to have a good game for the Wildcats. Although Patino and his Cardinals could pull it off like they did last year and win. This one is a toss up anytime these two teams meet
Many people have asked what a blog is? I typed it in Yahoo and this was the response:
After hearing from Ole Miss fans like John Herzog, Tim Brando has issued an apology about his comments earlier this week about Ole Miss football. It was rumored that Coach O was supposed to be on Brando's show today but Langston "Chickenwing" Rogers office cancelled due to Coach O being on the recruiting trail. But anyway I still think Brando is a good guy. So here is a link to Brando's comments about his statement on Ole Miss.
Former Mississippi State coach Jackie Wayne Sherrill has filed suit against members of the NCAA and a Madison businesswoman. Jackie is accusing them of tarnishing his reputation, (I dunno why he thinks his reputation was not tarnished before he even got to MSU). Accusations of unethical conduct were somehow dismissed by the NCAA on Sherrill. The suit was filed in Oktibbeha County on Dec. 2. As far as the woman named in the lawsuit Sherrill claims she told the NCAA about his recruitment of a particular Madison athlete. This lawsuit could possibly bring out how Jackie really recruited and further damage his character(if at all possible). Now if the NCAA would only investigate former MSU assistant Melvin Smith
Ole Miss will return to the hardwood tomorrow as they take on the Louisiana Monroe Indians. Ole Miss comes into the game with a three game winning streak. Since last weeks win over Memphis, Ole Miss has handled its openly without any problem. The game with the Indians will probably be the same. Juco transfer Londrick Nolen and senior Tommie Eddie both lead the team with 11.6ppg. The Rebel season is still up in air, look for freshman Brandon Patterson to really step it up and become another go to guy for the Rebels. Also do not look for Chris Rhodes to get that much playing time, he has spent most of the year at the end of the bench. For you true Rebel basketball fans out there with memories, Chris Oney is an assistant for ULM. Game time is at 2:00, if in the area stop by and watch the Rebs play.
LSU head coach Nick Saban and the Miami Dolphins are currently in discussion over Saban joining the Dolphin organization. It has been rumored the Dolphins are offering Saban $5million a year and the GM position as well. Many LSU fans do not believe Saban would leave the team. However it is my opinion he will be leaving just one year after winning a co-national championship. Saban who came from Michigan State is in the first year of a new 7 year contract that pays him 2.7 million this year. Some have speculated Tommy Tubberville may want the job at LSU. Other names mentioned if Saban leaves are 49ers Head Coach Dennis Erickson and LSU assistant Jimbo Fisher. Personally I think Fisher should be given the opportunity but the Tiger faithful will probably not give him the chance.
David Saunders a former coach at Ole Miss and good friend of Coach Ed Orgeron announced today he will stay put at Millsaps. Saunders, the head coach at Millsaps said Millsaps offered him an offer he could not refused. The Majors evidently upped his salary a good bit. Although this is not a big loss for the Rebels, Saunders was a fan favorite and well liked by those familiar with the coaching staff because of his social skills.
The University of Mississippi has just released its new web site. The new site offers a fresh new look to a site that was in dire need of updating. It adds a new picture section that is updated each time you go to the home page. If you look close one picture even feautres former ASB Presidents Drew Snyder and Alan Bean, wearing Drew in 02 stickers if I am not mistaken. Tell me what you think about the new design, I am not sure if I like it or not.
Inside sources say the Clarion Ledger got a hold of an article on this very own Blog and were worried about Michael Wallace and the perception Ole Miss fans had of the Clarion Ledger. In response, Rick Cleveland wrote a good column today on Coach O, known by his friends as Bebe. I was in attendance at the Cutcliffe firing press conference, and Cleveland asked a question that really made ChancellorKhayat mad and made him leave the podium to get his composure back. This is Cleveland's way of making up to his old friend.
Oxford's newest place to grab a plate lunch is pretty good. For those of you that are not familiar with it, the new Citgo on four corners sells plate lunches and bar-b-que everyday. The menu changes everyday. For a cheap price of $4.95 you get a meat and two vegetables, it is really a good deal for college students on a budget. So next time you are looking for a quick home-cooked meal check out the new Citgo off the square.
In response to a readers request I have figured out how to post Tim Brando's comments on the Rebs. Click on the link below to listen. Thanks to replayreb for this audio clip.
If any of you happened to be listening to the irate Paul Finebaum on Wednesday, a voice known as Bob called in to comment on the Ole Miss coaching situation. Bob is no other than the author of this web site. For those who are not familiar with Finebaum he is an argumentative sports radio call in show host in Birmingham. My few minutes of fame with Finebaum left me dissapointed. First of all Finebaum had no information on Coach O and kept trying to throw the answer back on me. Second of all Finebaum cut me off and hung up while I was talking to him to make the listeners think he knew what he was talking about. However, I do like to listen to his show, it brings out all the Alabama rednecks(including the Mobile Trash). If you are in the Alabama area it can be found on 960 AM or on XM radio across the nation.
This is an excerpt from the Commercial Appeal article. Will this be how our new coach is known. Are we going to hear about this stuff. Just like we heard about the hiring of Sly Croom at STATE. The media praised State for their hire for one reason. They will be digging up dirt on our new coach for a while. Personally I like the fire he will bring. And all of this is in his past.
You know a school has made a delicate hire when the chancellor says, in his opening statement, "Let he among us who is without sin cast the first stone." That's what Ole Miss chancellor Robert Khayat said about Orgeron. He also said this: "He had an unpleasant experience that involved behavior of which he is not proud." In July 1992 Orgeron was charged with second-degree battery -- a felony -- for allegedly head-butting a bar manager. In October 1992 he took a voluntary leave from the Miami "to get some personal things in order." In July 1993 he resigned his position at Miami and remained out of football for a year. That's what most newpapers had reported before the hiring. It didn't look great but it was a long time ago, you know? The guy went through a rough period. He was, as former Miami coach Dennis Erickson once said, "the wild man of the staff." But he paid a serious price by leaving Miami and starting all over again at Nicholls State. Wasn't that penalty enough? And then the Tupelo newspaper got a copy of the restraining order obtained by a woman who worked at the University of Miami. Orgeron was also ordered to participate in a 26-week treatment program. Court records indicate he had completed it by July 1992. Nobody at Ole Miss would go into the particulars, including Orgeron. "I'm completely confident in the steps I've taken to correct those mistakes in my life," he said. "They are no longer a part of my daily life." So is that good enough for you? It has been more than a decade, after all. Orgeron is married with three kids. Should we even be talking about this? Or is the issue of domestic violence different, somehow? Does Orgeron owe the Ole Miss family an explanation, something more? Anyone can be in a bar fight. Heck, some college fans might think it's a qualification for the job. But can anyone be served with a restraining order? Barring them from committing "repeat violence" against a woman? And given all that, can we really be confident Ole Miss got a good man? "Yes," said Khayat, emphatically. "Coach Orgeron had difficulties, we all know that, we talked about it a lot. He has also made major corrections in his lifestyle and his value system. "At least since the early 1990s this man has led a sterling life. He has a wonderful wife, wonderful children. He's a different man." Khayat admits to getting emotional about this subject. He has spent time with Orgeron. He admires him, frankly. He also thinks the scrutiny of public figures has gone too far.Is Michael Wallace doing his job or is he a State fan? Many Ole Miss fans think that everyday they pick up the Clarion Ledger, Michael Wallace is dogging Ole Miss on a different topic each day. For those of you who do not know Wallace, he is the Ole Miss beat writer for the Clarion-Ledger, the statewide newspaper. Many feel he did not correctly report the situations that went down with the hiring of our new coach. While I am not on the hate Michael Wallace bandwagon, I do believe he could give better reports on Ole Miss. Is there anyone else that feels the same way other Ole Miss fans do about the Clarion Liar?
The worldclassglass website has already experienced an upgrade. I have installed a free way to post comments without having to register, so if you posted earlier please repost where we can know what your names are. New features will hopefully come later as I learn about this stuff.
The City Coucil of Washington D.C. has put a halt on the plan of Major League Baseball. The city formerly run by Itta Bena, MS native and druggie Marion Berry has said they will not fully fund a new baseball stadium. The city says it will pay for only half of the stadium. Our nations capital was going to have baseball in its city for the first time in 33 years. D.C. resident and Washington Redskin fanatic Keith Studdard could see the dreams of a home town team fade because of the actions of the D.C. city council. All Washington National baseball operations have been stopped and the city has until December 31 to make a change in their decision.
The most important news of the day. The University of Mississippi has hired USC Asst. Coach/ Head Recruiter Ed Orgeron as the new head football coach. Coach O, as he prefers to be called, will bring fire to the game that has been absent on the Ole Miss sideline for the last six years. While I did not call for David Cutcliffe to be fired, I did think changes in the staff need to be made. I was very impressed in Coach O's interviewed and the fact he is recruiting already on the first day of his job. He is rumored to be visiting our prospects in South Panola as well as Memphis. Over the next several days it will be interseting to see who Coach O will hire as his assistants. Many have thought Jay Hopson and Matt Luke will be retained from the current staff. Right now it looks like R.C. Slocum's son will be brought on the staff also. However the one name I am concerned over is who the Offensive Coordinator will be. Noel Mazzone's name has been thrown around by several who have played the name game. Hopefully he will retain Pete DeWeese as a head manager on the team. I can not wait for Coach O to prove Tim Brando wrong.
MS State athletics announced today that Coach Sly Croom will receive a one year extension on his contract today. This will keep Croomdogg through the 2007 season. I know there are limitations on state government contracts but why would A.D. Larry Tempelton give Sly an extension amount the season State had. I really do not understand this.
Having met Tim Brando before, I am very upset with his comments. When I met Brando he was a nice guy, he, my dad, and I had a nice conversation at the SEC Tournament in Atlanta several years back. This is disturbing and I think Tim owes us and apology. I will try to get the audio posted later I am having trouble with it.
I just returned from the Lady Rebels game in which about 300 people were in attendence including all Cobra Security. I watched the entire second half with Ole Miss marketing intern Drew Levanway. The Lady Rebels killed a very very bad Grambling team. At one point in the game Grambling was in fear of playing with only four players due to foul trouble. It bring up the question how do schools like Grambling make it financially. This game was joke and while it was the only thing to do in Oxford tonight, I enjoyed supporting Coach Ross and her team. This Lady Rebel team has had an up and down season. However mainly down against big name teams. I watched this team get beat by LA TECH after having a ten point lead. LA TECH went on a 24-0 run midway through the second half. This team also only scored about 3o points against a TEXAS TECH in Lubbock. It will be interesting to see how Coach Ross will carry this team in her second season at Ole Miss. Good Luck to Coach Ross and her Lady Rebs.
For those of you who do not know who Gerald Glass is, he was one of the greatest basketball players Ole Miss ever had. Although Gerald only played at Ole Miss for two years(transfered from Delta State) he is a member of the 1,000 point club. Had Gerald been at Ole Miss all four years he would lead the all time scoring by several hundred. Gerald was an All-American from Greenwood's Amanda Elzy who became drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves. After playing in the league with the Timberwolves and later with the Detroit Pistons Gerald became injured and sat out of the league for several years. Gerald returned to Mississippi and if I am not mistaken coached at Brandon High School and is currently finishing his degree. Over the next several weeks we will take a look at the life of Gerald Glass and his impact on Ole Miss basketball and the life of several Mississippians. Tell me what you would like to know about this former all time great and I will see what I kind do. I would also like to know if anyone remembers him or any of the games he played in.
